What is energy management?

Energy management is the practice of monitoring, controlling, and optimizing how an organization uses energy to reduce costs, improve operational efficiency, and lower emissions, as described by IBM. It turns energy from a monthly bill you pay into a system you can measure and continuously improve.

What is energy management?

Energy management is the practice of monitoring, controlling, and optimizing how an organization uses energy to reduce costs, improve operational efficiency, and lower emissions, as described by IBM. It turns energy from a monthly bill you pay into a system you can measure and continuously improve.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) defines it in similar terms, as a proactive and systematic approach to monitoring, controlling, and optimizing an organization’s energy.

Why does energy management matter for businesses?

Energy is one of the most controllable operating costs a facility has. Managing it gives you lower bills, steadier budgets, and fewer surprises from equipment problems.

The U.S. EPA reports that energy is the single largest operating expense for a U.S. commercial office building. The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that commercial buildings waste about 30% of the energy they use. Reducing that waste is the opportunity energy management addresses. The IEA adds that energy can reach up to 50% of production costs in some industries.

The financial impact is significant. For example, if a company with a 10% profit margin achieves a net energy cost reduction of $10,000, those energy savings add the same profit as $100,000 in new sales.

What are the steps in an energy management program?

At a high level, energy management comes down to three steps: measure your energy use, take action on the biggest opportunities, and verify the results so the savings keep growing. Repeating the cycle is what turns one-time fixes into lasting gains.

Measure. Establish your baseline with utility bills, benchmarking, and metering that shows when and where energy is used. You cannot improve what you cannot see.

Act. Set clear goals, then put the highest-value opportunities into action first. Many start as no-cost or low-cost changes, such as adjusting schedules and set points.

Verify. Confirm the savings are real, share the results, and set the next target. Each round uncovers new opportunities.

Learn more: NRCan’s key steps for energy management outlines an eight-step version, and ENERGY STAR’s comprehensive energy management guidelines provide a seven-step roadmap.

What are the most common energy management challenges?

The three most common challenges are poor data, equipment running with faulty settings, and a lack of planning for upgrades. Better visibility helps address most of them.

IBM points out that manual audits and traditional meters rarely provide enough detail to spot wasteful patterns. Automated data collection, real-time alerts, and energy KPIs help teams catch problems early. Detailed energy data also makes it easier to prioritize retrofits and build a solid business case for each one.

Do you need ISO 50001 certification to manage energy?

No. You can run an effective energy management program without certifying to any standard. Certification is a voluntary option that some organizations pursue for structure and recognition.

The IEA notes that effective energy management can be carried out without certification, though it tracks ISO 50001 certifications as a signal of uptake. New certifications grew from 450 in 30 countries in 2011 to nearly 25,000 in more than 100 countries in 2023.

Is Energy Management a One-Time Project?

No. Energy management works best as a continuous improvement process, not a one-time project, and every step you take toward measuring and improving your energy use pays off. If you would like help getting started contact us or learn more about our process on the How It Works page.
